Dermal Fillers and Botox 101: Facial Rejuvenation Simplified

In this article I hope to shed some light on facial rejuvenation with dermal fillers and Botox injections. I have found that patients really benefit from a better understanding of how fillers and Botox work, as well as the importance of who is doing the procedure. In the right hands, these treatments are an extremely effective and affordable way to achieve a more youthful, refreshed and relaxed appearance.

What are Fillers?

“Fillers” are materials that we use to fill in lines or areas that lose volume due to age or from sagging skin and soft tissue. They can also be used to build up the cheekbones and fill in the hollow areas under the eyes, plump the lips, or to reshape the nose. Injected carefully into the skin or under the skin, they fill out tissues and restore a sense of youthfulness. Results from most fillers are instant, and results last from several months to years depending on the material used and where it is injected.

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a medication that produces temporary weakening of muscles. For facial rejuvenation, we use Botox to decrease the motion of the facial muscles that create wrinkles or unpleasant expressions, such as the vertical lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Botox can stop the formation of wrinkle lines and improve the appearance of existing lines. Results take a few days to develop and can last for four or more months.

While these procedures can be done with minimal downtime, all procedures carry risk and the most important factor is the person doing the procedure. As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, I use my experience and knowledge of facial anatomy and function as a guide to maximize your results, and all treatments are performed by me, never by trainees or nurse injectors.
