How To Prevent Depression After Your Plastic Surgery Procedure

Sexy carefree woman lies on bed It doesn’t make sense – you have been dreaming of having plastic surgery for years now, and you finally had it done. So why do you feel sad?

Depression after surgery

It is very common for someone who has been through a major surgery, such as a heart operation, to feel depressed when the surgery is done. There may be a fewer number of people who feel depressed after a plastic surgery procedure, but it does happen, and it’s not abnormal. It may be a result of the surgery itself. Surgery is always stressful and a disruption to the nervous system – depression may be your brain’s way of reacting to it all. Or, maybe the swelling hasn’t gone all the way down yet and you are wondering what you have gotten yourself into – why don’t you look the way you thought you would?

So what can you do about it?

Just realizing that some depression after an operation is normal can help to make you feel a bit better. Here are some things you can do before the procedure to make your recovery easier:

• Make sure you prepare yourself for your recovery. Have your favorite snacks within reach, have some meals prepared ahead of time, have a stack of books you’ve been meaning to read – you don’t want to have to worry about being bored or hungry when you should be taking care of yourself.

• Get a support system. If you are feeling down, let a friend or family member know that you need some support. This could include visits, but even if they just send texts every day it can do wonders for your mood.

• Have a discussion with your surgeon about what you can expect your recovery to look like. What will you look like right after the procedure? What will you look like after a week? This way you’ll know what to expect.
